family & friends

Living the suburban dream! I could not ask for a more wonderful family and network of friends. My wife Angie and son Koen are the center of my life. Whether we are riding our bikes, going out to eat, or just sitting on the couch and watching Survivor, we always find a way to absolutely enjoy one another.

Celebrating Christmas with Angie’s Family in Mankato

I have always felt very lucky that I enjoy all of my in-laws. We don’t see each other as much as some families, but we always have a great time when we get together for Christmas. In the past we have all gotten together at my mother-in-law’s in Byron or my sister-in-law and brother-in-law’s in Kasson. However, with families growing and moving, this year we decided to choose a more centrally located spot where the kids could run around and go swimming. We settled on the Mankato City Center Hotel and it could not have worked out any better. Direct Link to Christmas Photo...

Three Questions with Koen & Dad (2014-12-15)

Another week of Three Questions between Koen and I . It’s only Week Two and Koen’s questions are better than mine. I absolutely loved this question about winning a million dollars and saving or spending it? Trying a new set-up. Blowing out the background with four 105 watt CFL blubs and using a key light softbox with two 85 watt CFL bulbs and a fill light softbox with one 85 watt CFL bulb. I still can’t get the color quite right as I look a little green/yellow straight out of the camera. Shooting at F3.5, ISO 200, 1/50 at 24 fps. Trying to figure out the set-up I will use when I start recording some mini-lectures for class tomorrow. My Interview of Koen: Koen’s Interview of...

Three Questions with Koen & Dad (2014-12-07)

I am trying to start a new habit that was inspired by my mom. She has kept a journal ever since she was 16 and can tell you the exact date any important event has occurred in her or her children’s lives. Of course I can’t turn back time and do the same. However, a weekly or even monthly video blog between Koen and I would be a good start. The only rules are that he has to come up with the questions himself and that neither of us can know the questions ahead of time. We’ll see how long we can keep this up, but at the very least it could make for some great blackmail video at his high school graduation. This will also give me an opportunity to experiment with some video techniques and attempt to learn a new skill. There is a lot to learn. . . My video came out a little less sharp than Koen’s, so we are going to have to teach Ko how to dial-in that focus ring. However, his set of questions were...

Thanksgiving in Mapleton

In the last 39 years I have only missed Thanksgiving at my mom’s house a handful of times. I can’t imagine anything else that feels more like home. The time of year, the wonderful smells, the loving family, and of course the fantastic food is a highlight of my year. The family members that are able to attend ebbs and flows over the years, but this year we had a total of 19. My sister, who lives in Washington State, is rarely able to attend, so I wanted to see if I can catch the day in candid photos. I alternated between the “nifty fifty” 50mm 1.8 with natural light and my 24-70 2.8 with a strobe bounced off the ceiling. I shot the 50mm at f2.0, 1/160 at 320 ISO and the 24-70 at f2.8, 1/125 at 125 ISO. I really lean on the use of flash, so I rarely use natural light. However for these shots, I think I prefer the ones lit with natural light. After a year of shooting, I still have so much to learn, but it’s such a fun process. Post Trick or Treat Photo Booth Fun

Since Halloween fell on a Friday this year, we decided to invite the neighborhood over for a Post Trick or Treat Party. It was a crazy night with kids hopped-up on candy and some parents ready to let loose after a long week. I had a blast capturing most of our friends in a make-shift photo booth. Can’t wait to do it again next year. Direct Link to Halloween Photo...

Bloody’s & Football

A very fun afternoon of Vikings football and conversation with one of the best neighborhoods around. The Vikings actually beat the Bucs in overtime, but of course that was secondary. Thanks Kelly and Justin for the amazing hospitality. Direct Link to...
