Cross for Tots 2014–Photos

Saturday was a gorgeous day to drive down to Bloomington and shoot a few hours of Cross for Tots. Jay, Kristy, and all the volunteers with the help of Hollywood Cycles and Penn Cycle & Fitness did an amazing job of putting on a race that fit the personalities of the organizers. In 2013 they raised over $1000 and collected more than 175 toys for the Twin Cities Toys for Tots. With the official Minnesota cyclocross series in the books, most riders were more interested in having a good time than riding their competitors into the ground. I think that is also the approach I took behind the camera, as I did more chatting than shooting. However, I was able to capture a few photos of the day. Thanksgiving in Mapleton

Thanksgiving in Mapleton

In the last 39 years I have only missed Thanksgiving at my mom’s house a handful of times. I can’t imagine anything else that feels more like home. The time of year, the wonderful smells, the loving family, and of course the fantastic food is a highlight of my year. The family members that are able to attend ebbs and flows over the years, but this year we had a total of 19. My sister, who lives in Washington State, is rarely able to attend, so I wanted to see if I can catch the day in candid photos. I alternated between the “nifty fifty” 50mm 1.8 with natural light and my 24-70 2.8 with a strobe bounced off the ceiling. I shot the 50mm at f2.0, 1/160 at 320 ISO and the 24-70 at f2.8, 1/125 at 125 ISO. I really lean on the use of flash, so I rarely use natural light. However for these shots, I think I prefer the ones lit with natural light. After a year of shooting, I still have so much to learn, but it’s such a fun process. MN State Cyclocross Championship Photos

MN State Cyclocross Championship Photos

I had a great time catching up with friends and shooting one of the best, and most difficult, races of the year. The MN State Cyclocross Championships are held every year in Bassett Creek Park in Crystal MN. Had I been on a bike versus behind a camera this year it would have been ugly. The inch or two of snow that was still on the ground from the prior Monday made for some slick conditions. The racers that succeeded did so with a combination of power and bike handling. Neither of these are really my strong suit. I may line up for a cyclocross race again in the future, but just not in the near future. It’s still fun to try and capture the grit and determination of this brutal and beautiful sport. MN State CX Championship Photo Gallery Here are a few of the champions from Saturday. Congrats to all who competed and hats off to the promoters and volunteers that made it a great event....
Post Trick or Treat Photo Booth Fun

Post Trick or Treat Photo Booth Fun

Since Halloween fell on a Friday this year, we decided to invite the neighborhood over for a Post Trick or Treat Party. It was a crazy night with kids hopped-up on candy and some parents ready to let loose after a long week. I had a blast capturing most of our friends in a make-shift photo booth. Can’t wait to do it again next year. Direct Link to Halloween Photo...
